When the Water Stops: Why Emergency Water Planning Is Critical for Hospitals and Essential Facilities

Clean water is one of the most fundamental requirements for keeping any community or critical facility operating. Yet when organizations prepare for emergencies, water can sometimes be treated as a simple question of how many bottles can be stored in a warehouse.
The reality is much more complicated.
A water main break, natural disaster, contamination event, infrastructure failure, or prolonged utility outage can quickly disrupt access to safe drinking water. For hospitals, government agencies, emergency response organizations, correctional facilities, and other essential operations, that disruption can affect far more than drinking water.
Effective emergency preparedness requires a plan for how water will be sourced, purified, stored, and distributed when the normal supply cannot be relied upon.
Water Is a Critical Part of Continuity Planning
Most facilities depend on municipal water every hour of every day. When that supply is interrupted, bottled water can address some immediate drinking-water needs, but maintaining operations may require significantly more.
Consider a hospital.
During a water emergency, administrators may need to account for potable water used for:

Food preparation
Handwashing and hygiene

The Limitations of Stored Water
Storing emergency water is an important part of preparedness, but storage alone has limitations.
Water is heavy. It occupies significant space. Large quantities can be difficult to transport, and once the stored supply has been consumed, an organization must have a way to replenish it.
During a widespread emergency, those challenges can become even more significant. The same event affecting your facility may also affect transportation routes, suppliers, utilities, and surrounding communities.
An effective emergency water strategy should consider both stored water and the ability to produce additional potable water on site.
Turning Available Fresh Water Into an Emergency Resource

What happens if the disruption lasts several days?
Answering these questions can help determine the appropriate combination of purification, storage, and distribution equipment.

Producing clean water is only one part of the solution.
Water must also move from the source to the purification equipment, be safely stored after treatment, and ultimately reach the people who need it.
A complete contingency plan should therefore consider the entire process:
